Information Technology

Please note: As of fall 2021, the Information Technology (IT) degree has replaced the bachelor of science degree in Information Sciences and Technology (IST), which will be phased out over the next four years.

Are you creative and innovative? Do you like to solve problems in a team environment? Do you want to find solutions that optimize daily life to make the world a better place? If you answered yes, then Information Technology (IT) is the major for you.

Majoring in IT will prepare you to take on complex challenges in a workplace where information, technology and people work together in a rapidly changing digital world.

Computer Science, Management Information Systems or Computer Engineering programs focus on building computer hardware and software. In IT, these disciplines are combined to form a strong technical foundation, providing you with hands-on experience using today’s computer systems. However, unlike other IT programs, these skills are just the beginning.

Moving beyond technical know-how, the IT curriculum provides you with the ability to see the big picture, to be able to apply the appropriate technology to any given situation, and to know how to implement the solution. You get the opportunity to learn programming, math, business and even the psychological relationship between humans and their interaction with computers.

The program at Penn State Wilkes-Barre offers the opportunity for students to pursue an individually customized information technology interdisciplinary or exploratory program of study.

By providing you with real-world experience, in-demand skills and confidence, the IT program creates highly skilled leaders that are sought after everywhere in the global digital economy—from the board room to the computer room, from government to Fortune 500 firms. Be a part of the future today.

IT classes incorporate discussion, problem-solving, and real-world, hands-on exercises with an emphasis on leadership, teamwork, cultural diversity and professional interpersonal relationships.
