Penn State to commemorate 9/11 anniversary with events, memorials

Zion Sykes, a senior at Penn State, joined a large group of students at the Old Main lawn on the evening of Sept 9 to help create a 9/11 memorial consisting of 2,977 American flags. Each flag placed on the lawn represents a victim of the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The event was organized by Penn State's College Republicans and all students, staff, and faculty were welcome.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Events are being offered for Penn State campus and community members around the commonwealth in remembrance of those who lost their lives during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and their aftermath.

University Park

Flag placements Monday, Sept. 9, 6:30 p.m., Old Main Lawn. College Republicans at Penn State will lead the placement of 2,977 American flags on the Old Main lawn to honor each victim of the 9/11 attacks. Members of the Penn State and local community are invited to participate. The flags will be on display through 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12. 

Memorial service — Wednesday, Sept. 11, 5 p.m., Old Main Lawn. College Republicans at Penn State will host a memorial service to honor the victims of the 9/11 attacks.

Penn State DuBois

Memorial service — Wednesday, Sept. 11, 12:15 p.m., Schoch Plaza. Commemorate and honor those who lost their lives in the Sept. 11 attacks.

Penn State Harrisburg

9/11 Memorial Event Monday, September 9, noon, Vartan Plaza. This event has been hosted for the last three years by Penn State Harrisburg Young Americans for Freedom student club to honor the ones lost and injured during the terrorist attacks that took place on Sept. 11, 2001. Stop by to place American flags in the ground in remembrance. Flags will remain in Vartan Plaza until Thursday, Sept. 12, at 4 p.m. This event is open to the public. 

Penn State Wilkes-Barre

9/11 Remembrance Ceremony — Wednesday, Sept. 11, 12:30 p.m. Hosted by the Veteran's Support Club student organization, this remembrance ceremony will bring speakers to commemorate the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.
