DALLAS, Pa. — Penn State Wilkes-Barre will feature student artwork during the newest exhibit in the campus’ Friedman Art Gallery. The student art exhibit, which opened Feb. 3 and runs through March 31, features artwork by students enrolled in three different Penn State Wilkes-Barre courses.
One of those classes, Art History 112: Art & Music History, “Renaissance through Modern Times,” is taught by Jonathan Pineno, lecturer in music and art. His class studied various modern art and painting techniques. Students discussed environmental art and how to use recycled materials to create art. Using recycled plastic caps and hubcaps in multiple sizes from all types of bottles in addition to recycled cardboard, paint and glue, the class members created their own unique “CAPS” (Creative Art Project for Students).
Students in the Integrative Art 001: “Perceiving the Arts” course, also taught by Pineno, studied various artwork and painting techniques. For their class project, students incorporated techniques from a painting by well-known professional artist Bob Ross called “Shades of Grey.” The class members created their interpretations of the painting while following the painting instructions provided by the artist.
English 15: Rhetoric and Composition is a required course for all students at Penn State University. Students in the section taught by Christyne Berzsenyi created art for the exhibit. The students’ art projects accompany their “Storytelling with a Point” assignment, reflecting their stories and lessons for readers. The artistic renderings of their stories add a new dimension to their creative and intellectual communications.
The Friedman Art Gallery, located in the Nesbitt Academic Commons, regularly displays the works of students and local artists, in addition to private art collections. The gallery strives to promote, encourage and exhibit artworks of professional and amateur artists from the Penn State Wilkes-Barre campus and surrounding communities.
