Athletics

Please note that given the impending closure of Penn State Wilkes-Barre after the 2026-2027 academic year, there have been some changes to the campus’s athletic offerings. While the campus will still offer golf, current Penn State Wilkes‑Barre students who wish to participate in other teams are able to do so through either  Penn State Hazleton or Penn State Scranton.

Golf

Penn State Wilkes‑Barre’s golf team is led by coach Ed Kiel, a graduate of Penn State Wilkes‑Barre and an Air Force veteran. His teams have won eight conference championship titles and finished 2nd, 3rd, and 5th in the USCAA National Championship Tournament. Penn State Wilkes‑Barre has also won five prestigious Presidents Cup titles.

Penn State Wilkes‑Barre’s golfers have won four PCAA or PSUAC individual state titles and have had 133 golfers named All‑Conference or All‑State. The team also excels academically, with over 186 players being named Academic All‑Conference and 16 golfers named Academic All‑Americans.

Other Northeastern Region Teams

While Penn State Wilkes-Barre is sponsoring only varsity Golf, student-athletes are encouraged to compete on behalf of one of the other campuses within the region. Athletes are able to participate in inter-collegiate athletics through Penn State Scranton or Penn State Hazleton. Students are encouraged to reach out to athletic and coaching staff at either campus to discuss opportunities.

Athletics Facilities

The Athletic and Recreation Building (ARB) and its surrounding fields offer a wide range of fitness and wellness options to our students, including specialized equipment and programs. The facility contains a large gym, a regulation basketball and volleyball court, two racquetball courts, a squash court, a weight room with weight-training and cardiovascular equipment (including bicycles, ellipticals, and treadmills), and a multi-purpose room for fitness classes and other activities.

The ARB is open Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m. Use of the facilities is free for Penn State Wilkes-Barre students, faculty, and staff.

Ladies’ Golf Clinics

Every summer Penn State Wilkes-Barre offers golf clinics for women of all ages. Designed for beginner and intermediate golfers, the clinics offer expert instruction, fun practice sessions, and a supportive environment. Participants learn the fundamentals of golf, including grip, stance, alignment, and the full swing; they also develop skills for pitching, chipping, and putting on a grass putting green. Plenty of time is built in to ask Coach Keil questions about everything from clubs to course strategies.
