The 12th annual Penn State Wilkes-Barre Engineering Open House was held on Thursday, October 11th. Approximately 120 high-school students attended this event to observe different aspects of the engineering field.
During the opening session of the day, students were welcomed to campus by Chancellor Charles Davis. Dr. Tom Seybert then explained the engineering options at Penn State Wilkes-Barre, as well as the 2+2 programs in engineering.
Penn State Wilkes-Barre held a groundbreaking on October 17th for the newest building on the 54-acre Lehman campus, to be called the Struthers Family Career Services Center.
The Penn State Wilkes-Barre (3-6) soccer team finished its 2012 season with an 8-1 win over Penn State Worthington-Scranton. Wilkes-Barre won its last two games of the season by outscoring their opponents 17-2. Wilkes-Barre was led today with goals by Rob Hadvance (2), Mark Bugelholl (2), David Cavalieri, Paul Acenszi, Aaron Smith, and Matt John.
The Penn State Wilkes-Barre women's volleyball team spent a majority of their season raising money for a good cause, ALS. The team raised over $270 to be donated to the ALS Association. Penn State Wilkes-Barre swept the individual titles at the Penn State DuBois meet on Saturday. Chris Monohan finished first in the men's race and Alex Leandri finished first in the women's race. Emily Pszeniczny finished third in the women's race, while the men's team finished fourth out of seven teams. Wilkes-Barre will finish up the season at the PSUAC Championships next Saturday at Penn State Brandywine.
The Penn State Wilkes-Barre golf team finished fourth in the PSUAC, and 14th overall, at the PSUAC/USCAA National Championships at Penn State University.
Matt Boozer finished fourth overall in the PSUAC and Will Fulton finished seventh overall, both collecting medals for the Wilkes-Barre golf team.
The Penn State Wilkes-Barre Mountain Lion Varsity Club hosted the Nike Reuse-a-Shoe recycling program in the Athletic & Recreation Building today. Faculty, staff and students donated their old sneakers to the program; the shoes will be recycled into running tracks as well as basketball and tennis courts. The sneaker drive was featured on WNEP television.
The Penn State Wilkes-Barre (1-8) volleyball team won their first game of the season with a four-set match over Penn State Schuylkill on Sunday afternoon. Wilkes-Barre knocked off Schuylkill 3-1 by scores of 25-19, 26-24, 20-25, and 25-15. Senior Abby Collins led the way for her team with 15 service points and five aces. Sophomore Chelsea Wertz added 13 service points of her own along with four aces, while sophomore Sarah Konopki had six kills. In the nightcap, however, Wilkes-Barre fell to Penn State Brandywine 3-0 (25-9, 25-14, and 25-6).
The Penn State Wilkes-Barre team had an extremely successful day on its home course as several of the team's runners medaled at the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Cross Country Invitational. Alex Leandri finished first in the women's race, setting a new course record of 16:44. Emily Pszeniczny finished second in the women's race with a time of 17:36. The Penn State Wilkes-Barre men's team won their first race in school history as the took home the trophy at their home course. Chris Monahan finished second overall with a time of 29:28. Matt Sh
Artist Zoja Forsberg, a Swedish immigrant and Marywood University graduate, is now displaying her work at Penn State Wilkes-Barre's Friedman Art Gallery.
Zoja has gained artistic experience working as an interior designer for Leung Hemmler Camayd Architects, taking extra screening printing courses at Peters Valley Craft Education Center, and now in addition to working as an interior designer, she encompasses herself in the art of mixed media collages.
