The Mountain Lions return nine players from last season's baseball team. All of these men will be looked at for their talent and dedication on and off the field. Junior Mike Tierney was named Academic All American in the PSUAC and USCAA. Sophomore Kerry Meyers, Second Team All Conference, will hold down the infield with his golden glove with a .898 field percentage and leading the team with a batting average of .358 last season. Strong players to be on the lookout for are sophomore Richard Portugal, who started every game in the previous season, and junior Ed Moffett, with a batting average of .265 and who also started all games last year. Sophomores Tyler Loftus and Jeremy McDonnell will have a strong impact on the upcoming season, as they both saw action in more than half the games last year. Sophomores Jon Zionce, Rob Reilly, and Jonathan Aston will give Wilkes-Barre a nice starting rotation for pitching this upcoming season.
Pitching was Wilkes-Barre's main focus in recruitment for the 2014 season as they brought in Korey Stimmel, who is from nearby Montrose, Pennsylvania, with a high school 2.52 ERA and two wins his senior year. Nicholas Myers, an infield player and pitcher, started two games pitching for Montrose and did not give up a run for either start. Tyler Weiss, another recruit for the upcoming season, is a WVC All-Star and will be a positive addition to the starting rotation of pitchers. Devon Mazonkey from Northwest High School and Carlos Osorio from Delaware Valley High School, will provide depth on the plate for the Mountain Lions. Among the many other talented recruits, we will have a variety of strengths and talents on the field. Tyler Weiss (Tunkhannock High School) will be seen pitching or on 3rd base; Jeffrey Carter (Lake Lehman High School) at shortstop; Matt Korea (Northwest High School) behind the plate; Riverside Lackawanna League All Star Alec Parchinski in the outfield; and another WVC All-Star Lance Sherry (Tunkhannock) anywhere in the outfield. Matt Kocher (Hanover Area High School) is a talented player at many positions, which will complement the team well.
Penn State Wilkes-Barre will host half of their opponents this year, while playing half of them on the road. They're scheduled to play Division III opponent Marywood University as well as cross-town rival LCCC. Defending PSUAC champions and runner up in the USCAA, PSU Allegheny will host the Mountain Lions in the third game of the season. Needless to say, the Mountain Lions are up for quite a challenge in the upcoming season in their competitive league. The season will kick off Wednesday, March 26th when they play at Baptist Bible College.
