Northern Tier Center Offers Industry Training Courses

Beginning in October, Penn State Wilkes-Barre's Norther Tier Center in partnership with ShaleTec will be offering five Industry Training Courses: Confined Space Entry, Fall Protection Competent Person, Chainsaw Safety & Maintenance, Electrical Safety for Electrical Maintenance Personnel, and Hazwoper Refresher 8-Hour.

Confined Space Entry allows the entrant, attendant, or supervisor to safely and confidently understand and evaluate the hazards and procedures associated with confined spaces. This training helps you differentiate between a permit required and non-permit required confined space. The course addresses the hazards associated with confined spaces and outlines the duties and responsibilities of all members of a confined space entry team, emergency rescue procedures, and plan development. It also discusses the need for appropriate personal protective equipment and the selection characteristics for each level of protection. Because the use of instrumentation for monitoring is also essential to any confined space operation, the instruction addresses numerous types of direct-reading instruments, including their mode of operation and limitations of each type. This course effectively fulfills the requirements of 29 CFR 1910.146 for confined space entry.

This 8-hour Fall Protection Competent Person course provides an overview of state-of-the-art technology for fall protection and current OSHA requirements. Topics covered include the principles of fall protection, the components of fall arrest system, the limitations of fall arrest equipment, and OSHA policies regarding fall protection. Course features a half-day field exercise demonstrating fall protection equipment. The Competent Person course is designed for managers, immediate supervisors of authorized persons or individuals working at height. This training also includes Competent Person and Competent Inspector.

Chainsaw Safety & Maintenance is designed to provide the class with techniques and strategies for the safe operation of a chainsaw. The course will cover safety equipment, felling and limbing of trees, chainsaw maintenance including sharpening. The course has two segments. The morning session involves lecture and discussion, while the afternoon session includes the breakdown of a chainsaw, sharpening, and maintenance. Our goal is "Work Safe, Be Safe"
Electrical Safety for Electrical Maintenance Personnel combines essentials of industrial electrical safety, troubleshooting and installation, and how to meet OSHA and NFPA guidelines. Learn safe work practices for electricians, identifying dangerous electrical energy sources, how to minimize arc flash, and how to choose proper PPE. Discuss troubleshooting techniques of 480 and 240 volt systems, installation of new equipment, and theory behind over-current, short circuit, and ground fault protection. Instruction includes a blend of lecture, case studies, and interactive class discussion.

The 8-Hour Hazwoper Refresher course meets OSHA requirements for annual refresher training of personnel engaged in hazardous waste operations as outlined in 29 CFR 1910.120(e), including removal or handling of underground tanks and/or piping, contaminated soil and/or groundwater, subsurface investigations, construction work in which hazardous materials may potentially be present, encountered, prepared, packaged, labeled, marked, stored, shipped for disposal, or any facility wherein hazardous wastes are treated, stored, or disposed. The 8-Hour annual refresher is designed to update those who have already successfully completed 24 or 40-Hour HAZWOPER courses.
