Continuing Education offering Rape Aggression Defense System

The Rape Aggression Defense System is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. The R.A.D. System is a comprehensive 12-hour, women-only course that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training including simulation training.

R.A.D. is not a martial arts program. The courses are taught by nationally certified R.A.D. Instructors and provide each student with a workbook/reference manual. This manual outlines the entire Physical Defense Program for reference and continuous personal growth. The contents of the course were developed based on the natural movements and abilities of women in order to maximize a women’s ability to defend herself. Participants for this class should be 18 years of age. Attendance is limited, and is on a first-come, first-served basis.

R.A.D. will be taught by Lisa A. DeLaurentis and Andrew Yakubik. DeLaurentis is the Regional Chief of Police & Public Safety at Penn State's Wilkes-Barre and Worthington Scranton campuses. She is also an alumni of Penn State where she majored in criminal justice and then went on to graduate from Drexel University with a master’s degree in higher education. DeLaurentis has been teaching R.A.D. since 1997. Yakubik has been with Penn State for 15 years and is currently a Campus Police Officer at the Penn State Worthington Scranton campus. He is a graduate of the Police Academy at Lackawanna College and a Department trainer for three Municipal Police Departments and Penn State University Police. Yakubik has been teaching the R.A.D., S.A.F.E and Refuse To Be a Victim programs for a number of years.

R.A.D. will be offered as a series from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays Sept. 28, Oct. 5, Oct. 12 and Oct. 19, in the Athletics and Recreation Building on the Penn State Wilkes-Barre campus. Registration cost is $120 per person which includes the workbook. The deadline to register is Sept. 19.
