Three Days/Three Modes

Penn State Hazleton and Wilkes-Barre in collaboration with the Penn State Lehigh Valley Writing Project presents Three Days/Three Modes An Academy for Implementing the Common Core State Standards in Literacy.

This three-day academy offers all K-12 educators across all grade levels and content areas an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in Literacy, specifically writing, and how the standards affect classroom practices. Through an exploration of the CCSS in writing, participants will:

  • Learn how to integrate the CCSS through classroom writing in rich and meaningful ways;
  • Identify, analyze, and understand the curricular possibilities of the three modes (argument, informative, narrative);
  • Learn and develop writing-to-learn techniques across all content areas;
  • Design lesson plans for implementing the CCSS within the existing curriculum.
Comments from 2013 participants included:
"CCSS is not the enemy! It has the domains inside - we only need to pull them out."
"I like how the standards are K-12 because it sets a goal that is met at the ability of the child to move forward. Then each year is an increasing of maturity for their writing. It makes it seem very achievable."
"I want to familiarize my students more with the Common Core State Standards so that they understand why we do the things we do in the classroom."
