An AED, or automated external defibrillator, is used to help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. It's a device that can analyze the heart’s rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electrical shock, to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm. See the Red Cross’s description of how to use an AED in an emergency.
There are several AEDs located on campus for emergency use. You can find them here:
- Athletic & Recreation Building (ARB). The AED is located on the lower landing by the Nittany Lion statue, across from elevator. (There is also a portable AED which travels with the coaching staff.) There is a first aid kit in the lobby of the Athletics office.
-
Bell Center for Technology. The AED is located on the upper level to the right of the elevator (just outside the EET classroom). A first aid kit is located there as well.
-
Hayfield House. The AED is located on the first floor, just outside of the elevator by the floating staircase. A first aid kit is located in the kitchen.
-
Murphy Student Services Center. The AED is located across from the restrooms. A first aid kit is located there as well.
- Nesbitt Academic Commons. The AED is located on the lower level, across from the restrooms and to right of the door to the Maintenance room. A first aid kit is located there as well.

Science Building. The AED is located inside the faculty office/lounge area on the right wall (outside the kitchenette area). A first aid kit is located there as well.
