Hayfield House

Hayfield House on Penn State Wilkes-Barre campus

Hayfield House was built as a summer home by the Conyngham family during the Great Depression at a cost of over $1 million. The entire three-story mansion is beautifully ornate, with decorative wood carvings and rare architectural antique objects imported from Europe. (For example, the sliding stained-glass windows in the former library originally shone in the Tuileries Palace in Paris.) Many of the rooms in Hayfield House have walls that are covered with hand-painted scenery and other decorations.

Room 105 in Hayfield House set up for a special event

Room 105: This was the original main living room in Hayfield House. The marble fireplace, which is several hundred years old, was taken out of a palace in Europe. A copy of the fireplace also adorns the other end of this magnificent room, which can be used for weddings, showers, holiday parties, meetings, training sessions, or other events.

H-107 decorated for a special event.

Room 107: This was the original family dining room. The coats of arms over the doorway depict the history of the Conyngham and Robinson families. Today, this room is used for special occasions and can seat approximately 50 people depending upon the use and set up. Rooms 107 and 108 are rented together. This room is 25' x 30'.

The Chinese Breakfast Room, with original ornate hand-painted walls of Chinese buildings and landscapes.

Room 108: This was the Conyngham’s Chinese breakfast room; it still boasts the original ornate hand-painted walls.  This room is also used for special occasions and is adjacent to H-107. Rooms 107 and 108 are rented together. This room is 22' x 22'.

Floating staircase in Hayfield House on the Penn State Wilkes-Barre campus

Floating Staircase: This architecturally unique staircase is called “floating” because it is supported only from the ceiling and the floor. This makes a beautiful setting for wedding party and family photos.
