10/15/2025 – Wilkes-Barre Golf Team Shines at USCAA/PSUAC National Championship

The Wilkes-Barre golf team wrapped up its fall season with a stellar showing at the 2025 USCAA/PSUAC National Championship, held October 13–14 at the Penn State Blue Course in State College. Competing against 15 other teams and 106 players, Wilkes-Barre posted scores of 337 on day one and an impressive 325 on day two —their lowest team total of the season.

Individual Standouts

  • Charlie Melvin: Shot rounds of 82 and 69 (total 151), earning First Team USCAA All-American honors. His 69 — featuring 3 birdies, 2 bogeys, and an eagle — is tied for the second-lowest round in USCAA tournament history.

  • Chris Hunter: Posted rounds of 79 and 75 (total 154), securing a spot on the Second Team USCAA All-American list.

  • Jake Dubaskas: Contributed with rounds of 85 and 88 (total 173).

Wilkes-Barre was the only school in the championship to have two All-Americans, a testament to the team’s depth and talent. Notably, Charlie Melvin joins Mike Haley (2008, 2009) as the only Wilkes-Barre golfers to earn First Team honors twice.

Academic Excellence

Four players were named to the USCAA All-Academic Team, recognizing their cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher:

  • John Burden

  • Jack Karosa

  • Charlie Melvin

  • Logan Slacktish

PSUAC Honors

  • Charlie Melvin and Chris Hunter: Named PSUAC All-Conference

  • Coach Ed Keil: Honored as PSUAC Coach of the Year by his peers

The PSUAC All-Academic Team will be announced later in the year.

With the spring season still ahead, the team’s strong finish and individual accolades set a promising tone for continued success. Here’s to building on this momentum!

10/7/2025 – Best performance yet secures 4th‑place finish

On Monday, October 6, under high skies and unseasonably warm temperatures, the Wilkes-Barre golf team competed in the Clark Luis Invitational hosted by Penn State Hazleton at Valley Country Club in Sugarloaf, PA. The tournament honored Clark Luis, who has served as Director of Golf at Valley Country Club for an impressive 45 years. For the past 25 years, Luis has also been a PGA National Rules Official, offering rulings to top PGA professionals at events across the country.

As the day progressed, the sun-baked greens became increasingly fast, making putting especially treacherous. Although the pin placements were fair, the severely undulating greens challenged even the most seasoned players. Despite the tough conditions, Wilkes-Barre delivered its best team performance of the season, posting a score of 336 and securing a fourth-place finish out of eight teams.

Charlie Melvin led the charge with a solid 78, followed by Chris Hunter and Jake Dubaskas, each carding 85. Jake Speicher rounded out the scoring with an 88. Notably, this marks the third consecutive match in which Dubaskas has shot an 85 — an impressive streak of consistency.

The team wraps up its fall regular season this Thursday, October 9, at the Penn State Lehigh Valley Fall Invitational held at Riverview Country Club in Easton.

9/30/2025 – Coach Keil receives Scannell Award

The 2025-26 Scannell Award was presented this fall to long-time Penn State Wilkes-Barre golf coach Ed Keil. The honor is bestowed by the Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference upon an athletics administrator, coach, faculty or staff member for outstanding contributions to their PSUAC member institution and the PSUAC.

Keil has been coaching at Penn State Wilkes-Barre since 1988, after having been a student at Wilkes-Barre in the late 1970s. He has also recently taken the reins of the Penn State Hazleton golf program. Keil has compiled eight conference championships during his tenure, in addition to 53 tournament titles and five undefeated regular seasons. Under his tutelage, Wilkes-Barre has recorded 133 PSUAC All-Conference golfers, 186 PSUAC All-Academic recipients and four PCAA/PSUAC individual medalists.

Inducted into Wilkes-Barre’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015, Keil has also been named the United States Collegiate Athletic Association’s Golf Coach of the Year, earning that accolade in 2018.

Keil has spent his life around golf, serving as a Women’s and Junior Golf Clinic instructor since 2000 and serving as course superintendent at various courses in the Wilkes-Barre region since 1980.

“Ed is one of the most deserving Scannell award recipients we’ve ever had,” said PSUAC Commissioner Ryan Ehrie. “He has committed himself to Penn State Wilkes-Barre over the years, and now Penn State Hazleton as well. He constantly strives to make his student-athletes better golfers, but also better people. Ed has always done whatever he’s been asked at Wilkes-Barre and he’s done the same for the PSUAC.”

Keil was presented the award in front of his peers and the entire group of PSUAC golfers after the PSUAC Blue Course Invitational on September 29.

Keil fully understands the significance of the recognition, saying, “I truly consider [receiving this] award an honor.”

9/30/2025 – Team posts its best score of the season so far

The golf match scheduled for Thursday, September 25 was cancelled due to heavy rain and thunderstorms. A rescheduled date is being considered for later in October.

On Sunday, September 28, the team competed against College Misericordia at the challenging Irem Country Club in Dallas under sunny skies and warm conditions. Despite a strong team effort and a total score of 360, the slick greens proved difficult, and Misericordia edged out a win by just two strokes. Leading the way for Wilkes-Barre was Charlie Melvin, who earned overall medalist honors with an impressive 3-over 75. He was followed by Jake Dubaskas (85) and Chris Hunter (99).

The following day, ten golfers represented Wilkes-Barre in a 10-team tournament at the Penn State Blue Course in State College. In ideal playing conditions, the team posted its best score of the season with a total of 338 — 15 strokes better than their previous high. Top performers included:

  • Charlie Melvin – 77
  • Jake Speicher – 84
  • Jake Dubaskas – 85
  • Chris Hunter – 92
  • Kaiden Merson – 92
  • John Burden – 94

Looking ahead, the team will compete in the Clark Luis Invitational hosted by Penn State Hazleton at Valley Country Club in Sugarloaf on October 6. The regular season concludes at the Penn State Lehigh Invitational at Riverview Country Club in Easton on October 9.

9/18/2025 – Wilkes-Barre golf team battles weather

The Wilkes-Barre Golf Team competed Wednesday at the Mont Alto Invitational, held at the Penn National Golf Courses’ Founders Course. The event began under heavy gray skies and was delayed due to torrential rain that left the greens waterlogged and unplayable. After a brief improvement in conditions, play commenced in light rain, only to be halted again as heavier showers returned and puddling worsened. Eventually, the skies cleared, allowing the remainder of the tournament to proceed rain-free.

Charlie Melvin, teeing off in the first group and facing the worst of the weather, delivered a commendable round of 84. Notably, the three players who tied for low individual scores all began their rounds after the rain had stopped.

Despite missing two starters—Chris Hunter and Jake Dubaskas—Wilkes-Barre posted its second-best team score of the season with a total of 358. Kaiden Merson (86), Jake Speicher (90), and John Burden (98) each recorded their best rounds of the year. The team continues to show grit and determination. With a full roster, their potential is promising—and the best may be yet to come.

9/15/2025 – Penn State Wilkes-Barre to compete at Mont Alto

After a strong showing last weekend, the Penn State Wilkes-Barre golf team is back in action this Wednesday, September 17, as they travel to compete in the Penn State Mont Alto Invitational. The match will be held at Waynesboro Country Club, a scenic and challenging course known for its rolling fairways and tricky greens.

The team enters the event riding momentum from standout performances at the Officer Joe Izzo and Penn State DuBois Invitationals, where Charlie Melvin led the way with back-to-back rounds of 75, earning medalist honors on Saturday and a runner-up finish on Sunday. His consistency and poise will be key again as the team faces another tough field.

Joining Charlie will be Josh Dubaskas, Jake Speicher, John Burden, and Logan Miller, all looking to build on their weekend scores and push the team leaderboard higher. With two solid team totals of 366 and 361 last weekend, Wilkes-Barre is trending in the right direction.

With confidence high and the team hungry for another strong outing, Wednesday’s match promises to be a competitive and exciting test. Stay tuned for results and highlights as Penn State Wilkes-Barre continues its fall campaign.

9/13/2025 and 9/14/2025 – Back-to-back invitational tournaments

The Penn State Wilkes-Barre golf team delivered a gritty and commendable performance over the weekend, competing in back-to-back invitational tournaments despite being short two of its regular starters. The team showcased resilience, determination, and flashes of brilliance on two challenging courses.

Officer Joe Izzo Invitational hosted by Penn State Shenango

Held at the picturesque yet demanding Yankee Run Golf Course in Brookfield Township, Ohio, the Officer Joe Izzo Invitational hosted by Penn State Shenango on Saturday featured a tight and hilly layout that tested every golfer’s precision and patience.

Leading the charge was Charlie Melvin, who put together a masterful round of 75, earning individual medalist honors out of a competitive field of 54 golfers. His steady play and course management stood out on a day when many struggled with the terrain.

Team Scores for Saturday:
  • Charlie Melvin: 75
  • Josh Dubaskas: 87
  • Jake Speicher: 96
  • John Burden: 108
  • Logan Miller: 109
  • Team Total: 366

Penn State DuBois Invitational

The team then traveled to DuBois Country Club for Sunday’s Penn State DuBois Invitational, where they faced an even more demanding course: steep hills, narrow fairways, and fast greens made for a true test of endurance and skill.

Once again, Charlie Melvin rose to the occasion, carding another impressive 75, which earned him second place overall in a strong field. His consistency across two tough venues was a highlight of the weekend.

Team Scores for Sunday:
  • Charlie Melvin: 75
  • Jake Speicher: 94
  • Josh Dubaskas: 89
  • John Burden: 110
  • Logan Miller: 103
  • Team Total: 361

Congratulations to the team

Congratulations to Charlie Melvin for an outstanding weekend of golf, and hats off to the entire team for competing with heart and determination under challenging circumstances. Their effort and sportsmanship continue to represent Penn State Wilkes-Barre with pride.

9/4/2025 – First official match of the year

Penn State Wilkes-Barre kicked off its 2025 intercollegiate golf season on September 4th with a strong showing at the Penn State University White Course. This marked the team’s first official match of the year, setting the tone for what promises to be a competitive season in the PSUAC.

Facing off against regional rivals, the team demonstrated poise and potential on the challenging terrain of the White Course. With standout performances from returning players and promising contributions from newcomers, the team showed depth and determination from tee to green.

As the season unfolds, Penn State Wilkes-Barre looks to build on this momentum and continue to challenge the conference. Their next match, hosted by Penn State Shenango, is scheduled for Saturday, September 13th.
