Dr. Charles Davis, Penn State Wilkes-Barre Chancellor, and the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Student Government Association are pleased to announce the 2013-2014 student recipients of The John R. Murphy Award for Excellence in Leadership & Service, The Martin U. Dougherty Emerging Leader Award, The Eric A. & Josephine S. Walker Award, and the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Who's Who in American Colleges & Universities.
Congratulations to sophomore Kerry Meyers and freshman Lance Sherry who were named to the 2014 PSUAC Baseball All-Conference Team. Meyers, who was named 2nd Team All-Conference, finished third in the PSUAC with a .457 batting average. Sherry, who was named Honorable Mention, led Wilkes-Barre with three home runs.
Penn State Wilkes-Barre's Student Support Services recently held its annual year-end celebration for its students at AppleTree Terrace at Newberry Estate in Dallas.
The students were treated to a night of great food, fun and friendship with their fellow students, faculty, and staff, honoring the continuing students, transfer students, peer mentors, work study students, and spring graduates.
The Mountain Lions had a close first game against Penn State Brandywine, dropping it just 4-2. The only runs for this game were scored by Portugal and Weiss, while Mazonkey and Weiss put up the two RBIs. In game two it was another close loss, 7-3, where Portugal and Weiss scored again along with Sherry. Weiss, Carter and Mazonkey recorded RBIs in game two.
Carrie Perez was an adult student who has been in the information technology field for about 16 years. Carrie is currently employed at St. Luke's University Health Network in Bethlehem, PA as a senior applications analyst and has been offered a job with Siemens in Harrisburg, PA as an ancillary applications systems analyst.
The Penn State Wilkes-Barre baseball team lost both games against Penn State Schuylkill Thursday afternoon. In game one they were defeated 10-0. Kerry Meyers, Devon Mazonkey, Alex Parchinksi, and Tyler Weiss (2) all had hits on the day. In game two they fell 16-8, but on a better note Kerry Meyers and Richard Portugal each had 2 runs, while Devon Mazonkey, Aaron Holton, Lance Sherry and Edward Moffett also scored to put the Mountain Lions on the board.
Richard K. Struthers, Penn State alumnus and Penn State Wilkes-Barre Advisory Board member, will address graduates at the Penn State Wilkes-Barre commencement ceremony Saturday, May 10 at 10:00 a.m. in the campus' Athletic and Recreation Building.
After a doubleheader victory against Penn State Hazleton, the Mountain Lions picked up two more wins against Penn State Worthington Scranton Friday afternoon. In game one Wilkes-Barre won 5-3; Sherry, Portugal, Carter, Weiss and Meyers all picked up a run on the day and K. Meyers, J. Carter and N. Myers all recorded an RBI. In game two they went on to defeat Worthington Scranton by a huge victory of 16-3. Rambus, Parchinski, Gulbierz (2), Walker, Carter, Weiss (2), Zionce, Sherry (2), Osorio, Portugal, and Meyers (3) scored to soar over their opponent.
Wilkes-Barre swept Penn State Hazleton on Thursday afternoon, 15-8 and 6-0. In the first game of the day, the Mountain Lions had an impressive game and showed some great talent on the field. Left fielder Lance Sherry and shortstop Jeffrey Carter each had three runs in the game, while center fielder Richard Portugal, third baseman Tyler Weiss, and first baseman Devon Mazonkey all scored twice. In game two, runs by Sherry, Portugal, Meyers, Mazonkey, and Carter (2) led the Mountain Lions to shut out PSU Hazleton.
Penn State Wilkes-Barre is proud to announce the 2014 inductees into its Athletics Wall of Fame: Jeanette (Faux) Siegel, Jerry Greeley, Quantel Howard, and Bryan Yagel. Each individual will be recognized at the annual SGA Leadership and Athletic Awards Banquet on Thursday, May 1st. The Athletics Wall of Fame was established in 2009 to honor former student-athletes, coaches, and contributors who have played an integral part in the growth and success of Penn State Wilkes-Barre athletics.
