Penn State Wilkes-Barre recently hosted a regional sustainability meeting for Penn State’s Commonwealth Campuses, which brought participants from throughout northeastern Pennsylvania together to share sustainability goals, best practices, ideas and successes.
At an event held on Oct. 31, leaders from the Student Philanthropy Network announced that the class of 2024 has voted to create the University Park Undergraduate Association Basic Needs Endowment as their class gift. The fund will provide sustained support for students facing hardships in pursuit of their degree.
Penn State Wilkes-Barre Athletics recently held its first all-sport Media Day on campus for its student-athletes. Parents, students, staff and the community were invited to attend the event, which served as an introduction to the 2023-2024 sports season and showcased more than 70 athletes and coaches from the baseball, golf, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball teams.
Penn State Wilkes-Barre has appointed Joe Domino as its new head soccer coach for the 2024 season. A native of upstate New York, Domino has more than 25 years of experience coaching girls junior varsity and boys varsity soccer at Ichabod Crane Central School District in New York.
Members of the community are invited to attend the 33rd annual Arts at Hayfield Homespun Holidays Craft Show on Sunday, Nov. 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. inside Penn State Wilkes-Barre’s Student Commons Building and Athletic and Recreation Building. The event will feature more than 100 crafters who will display and market artwork, jewelry and more.
Kiarra Moore, a criminal justice major from Rochester, New York, is in her final year at Penn State Wilkes-Barre after transferring to the campus from Genessee Community College in New York for the start of her junior year.
Penn State Wilkes-Barre will host “Women Working in The Court System: Challenges and Triumphs,” a panel discussion, on Oct. 26 from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. The event is free and open to the public in-person in Room 101 of the Science Building, or via Zoom.
Recently tenured and promoted Penn State faculty across the University were honored Oct. 2 through Penn State’s Promotion and Tenure Recognition Program, now in its 21st year, during a private event held in the Paterno Family Humanities Reading Room on the second floor of Pattee Library at the University Park campus.
Penn State Wilkes-Barre’s Friedman Observatory is hosting several on- and off-campus “Solar Masquerade” events for the community to celebrate the upcoming partial and near-total solar eclipses in October 2023 and April 2024.
Kevin Major, a 2022 graduate of Penn State Wilkes-Barre, has signed a contract to play professional basketball in Albania this season. Major will play with the team BC Partizani Tirana, which plays in the Albanian A-1 league and is the most successful team in Albanian basketball history with 33 championships won.
