Supply Chain Fundamentals Certificate

Program Overview

This non-credit Supply Chain Fundamentals certificate program is designed to provide a solid foundation for those who have recently joined the supply chain industry or have been working in the industry and are ready for advancement. The topics introduced will provide a solid foundation for a career in the supply chain industry and will allow certificate recipients to successfully contribute to the growth of the industry.

The classes are interactive sessions; the expectation is that students will be actively engaged and bring real-world examples into the classroom.

Note: Upon completion of this four-course certificate, attendees are eligible to sign up for the for-credit Supply Chain Management certificate.

Objectives

The goals of this certificate are to:

  1. Introduce those currently working in the supply chain industry to the key concepts required for advancement.
  2. Fulfill the industry’s need for skilled employees ready for advancement.
  3. Provide current supervisors with the skills to become leaders in an organization.

Course Descriptions

SCM 5050: Essentials of Supply Chain Management

This course provides the foundational understanding to manage effective supply chains. You will learn common terminology, inventory methodologies, distribution concepts, and service performance. (15 hours)

Topics covered include:

  • High-level overview of the supply chain industry and important components from end to end
  • Integration of departments and impact on outcomes
  • Introduction to Excel and its use in the supply chain industry
  • Effective business skills, including:
    • Communication, decision making
    • Conflict identification and management
    • Time management, prioritizing issues and knowing when to escalate
  • Opportunities available and career path options in the supply chain industry

SCM 5054: Fulfillment Operations Management

This course will provide you with the understanding of fulfillment operations from forecasting through delivery. (15 hours)

Topics covered include:

  • Review of the primary functions in fulfillment activities
  • Receipt of goods
  • Inventory storage
  • Order processing
  • Picking and packing
  • Shipping
  • Delivery
  • Returns processing
  • Focus on manual and automated applications
  • The future of order fulfillment operations

SCM 5056: Transportation Operations and Sourcing

This course delivers the foundational understanding needed to manage transportation operations. Learn common terminology and methods to effectively manage transportation operations, source carriers, and work with third-party providers in order to reduce transportation costs and improve service levels. (15 hours)

This course will:

  • Develop a working knowledge of transportation services and intermediaries and how to partner with them successfully
  • Review transportation modes and common applications
  • Introduce and evaluate supply chain intermediates

Topics covered include:

  • Partner techniques
  • Sourcing objectives and strategies
  • Assessing tradeoffs: speed and inventory
  • Analyzing and communicating success
  • Impacts of the pandemic on sourcing

SCM 5053: Forecasting and Inventory Management

Inventory management may be the most important “lever” in the supply chain that can affect overall corporate profitability. This course strengthens the understanding of foundational concepts and the contextual knowledge to drive improvements. (15 hours)

Topics covered include:

  • Overview of forecasting concepts and introduction of methodologies
  • Inventory management components and processes
  • The importance of forecasting and inventory management to corporate strategies
  • How operations react to and support forecasting and inventory management
  • The nexus of forecasting and inventory management
  • Current challenges in supply chain management and business reaction
