Family recovery is a highly individualized journey that provides a unique perspective regarding the recovery process. A Certified Family Recovery Specialist (CFRS) understands the stigma associated with substance use disorder and its impact on the family. This recovery journey is a voluntarily maintained lifestyle that includes the pursuit of spiritual, emotional, mental and physical well-being that is often supported by others but is not contingent upon the recovery of our loved one(s).
The Certified Family Recovery Specialist credential is for adults who have been directly impacted by another person’s substance use disorder. The CFRS shares their lived experience with other families to provide recovery support services.
This 6-hour family-focused program is the additional training a Certified Recovery Specialist (CRS) needs for the 60-hour Certified Family Recovery Specialist (CFRS) peer-support position formally recognized by the Pennsylvania Certification Board. Penn State Wilkes-Barre is an approved education provider for both the CRS and CFRS certification training programs. Participants in this CFRS program will receive education in the areas of Family Recovery & Restoration and Healing the Stigma of Addiction.
To apply for certification to become a CFRS, individuals must meet the Pennsylvania Certification Board (PCB) requirements, including:
- Successful completion of this 6-hour training, plus 54 hours of Certified Recovery Specialist (CRS) training
- Three letters of reference/character
- Statement of Lived Experience
Please note: There is no certification exam for the CRFS designation. Upon completion of the above training, the PA Certification Board requires candidates to complete the CFRS application and provide the other requisite documents. The cost to apply is $125, payable directly to the Board.
