Personal Enrichment

Personal Enrichment

The Penn State Wilkes-Barre Continuing Education office offers personal interest programs that have an educational and cultural interest to the community. Examples include the Ladies’ Golf Clinics, Rape Aggression Defense System (R.A.D.), and our Film & Discussion series that is offered each fall and spring.

New Offering!  Scholarly Lecture Series

The Penn State Wilkes-Barre Scholarly Lecture Series is designed to encourage the exchange of ideas as well as pass on scholarly knowledge and creative work. It is an ideal opportunity to interact with members of Penn State Wilkes-Barre faculty. Faculty members share their research, ideas, knowledge and insight as a way to enhance cultural awareness and promote interest in a vast array of topics, ranging from science and technology to creative writing.

Next in the series:

Communication Lessons Learned from Lieutenant Columbo’s Investigative Style

Speaker: Dr. Christyne Berzsenyi, Associate Professor of English

This presentation examines the detective’s use of carefully constructed questions, expressions of praise and dependence on the suspect’s expertise to solve the crime, and facade of “antipotency,” a kind of subordination to resistant subjects.

Dr. Christyne Berzsenyi has been a faculty member at Penn State Wilkes-Barre for 18 years. She received her bachelor’s degree in English from the University of California, Irvine; her master’s degree in English at the California State University, Long Beach; and her Ph.D. in English Rhetoric and Composition from the University of Oklahoma. Dr. Berzsenyi’s research focuses on the analysis of interactive written communication via multi-media and on theorizing new forms of communication that can be applied in our daily lives.
